#tbt : A statue of Asclepius, the god of Medicine in Ancient Greece, in the museum of modern day Epidaurus 🏛. In mythology, Asclepius was the son of Apollo, who brought him as an infant to centaur Chiron 🐎. Chiron raised Asclepius and instructed him in the art of medicine 💉. It is said that in return for some favor by Asclepius, a snake 🐍 licked his ears teaching him secret knowledge. To the Ancient Greeks snakes 🐍🐍🐍 were sacred animals of healing and wisdom. Asclepius was killed by Zeus using a thunderbolt for bringing Hippolytus back to life. His rod, a snake-entwined staff, still remains the symbol of medicine to this day.
