River Of Darkness
The river that leads to a heart of darkness
A downcast soul sees no way out
Frozen as if Medusa fixes her gaze
Upon the hopeless
On its shores a siren calls out
In a song of paradise
You can claim with a sword
The power to rule
Without pretense of purity.
The slow journey up the river is serene
No one suspects the inviting light
Such angels decorate the senses
Eyes, ears, taste, touch
All meet the allure and luster
With open arms
Each sensation more extreme
Than the one before
Until you notice
Sweet is followed by sour.
Even the sanguine fruits of the flesh
Become sinister dalliances
Taking and consuming yours
Hope falls away
A wounded child where dreams
Die in agony.
The desire to alleviate pain
Becomes the drug to fuel the pursuit
Never guessing the river is
The coil of an elusive snake
Slowly constricting you:
Life is the arc light,
The halo at the point of no return,
The reversal of fortune.
But to those who are seduced
It appears as an illusion.
The disillusioned draw deeper in
Lures of perpetual pleasure
From penetrating pain
Deceive you to accept the music
Only one inevitable outcome.
The angel of lies grins,
Dances with you into the noose,
Or tempts you to pull the trigger
And smile at the end of a gun.
